Trauma is the aftermath when an event overwhelms our capacity to feel safe

Trauma can touch every part of our lives, emotionally we might feel anxious, numb, or flooded by flashbacks; physically we can experience sleep problems, chronic aches, or a racing heart; cognitively it can cloud memory, focus, and decision-making; behaviorally we might avoid places or people, turn to numbing habits, or get easily startled; and in relationships it can make trust, intimacy, and communication much harder. These impacts can also affect work, parenting, and daily routines, turning once-manageable tasks into heavy lifts.

The Spectrum of Trauma

1. Interpersonal Trauma

This category includes trauma that arises from relationships or interactions with others, often involving harm or betrayal.

  • Emotional or Psychological Trauma: Distress from bullying, violence, or overwhelming experiences.
  • Sexual Trauma: Includes rape, sexual assault, or childhood sexual abuse.
  • Neglect: Emotional or physical neglect leading to unmet needs.
  • Chronic Trauma: Prolonged exposure to distressing events, such as ongoing abuse.
  • Complex Trauma: Repeated exposure to interpersonal trauma, particularly in childhood.
  • Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD): While primarily a diagnosis stemming from complex trauma, it reflects the cumulative effects of multiple interpersonal traumas.
  • Sibling Trauma: Emotional distress caused by trauma or loss of a sibling.
  • Betrayal Trauma: Emotional pain from the betrayal of trust by someone close.

2. Event-Based Trauma

This category encompasses trauma resulting from specific events or circumstances, often with a singular origin point.

  • Acute Trauma: Resulting from a single overwhelming event, such as a car accident.
  • Physical Trauma: Injuries from accidents or violence.
  • Medical Trauma: Distress from severe illness or medical procedures.
  • Loss or Grief: Emotional impact from losing a loved one or significant relationship.
  • Environmental Trauma: Trauma due to natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes.
  • Financial Trauma: Emotional distress from financial instability or overwhelming debt.

3. Collective and Systemic Trauma

This category includes trauma that affects groups or communities, often extending beyond individual experiences.

  • Collective Trauma: Shared trauma experienced by a group or community, often due to events like genocide or war.
  • Cultural or Community Trauma: Experiences affecting entire communities due to systemic oppression or historical injustices.
  • Historical Trauma: Cumulative emotional harm experienced by populations due to systemic injustices, passed down through generations.
  • Racial or Ethnic Trauma: Psychological harm from racism and discrimination.
